Ca urmare, intr-o lume moderna dominata de relatii publice, era nevoie de o rebranduire “strategica” pentru a salva ce se mai putea din idealul totalitar. Si uite asa au aparut tot felul de ersatzuri surprinzatoare menite sa oculteze ispita controlului complet. Corectitudinea politica, ecologismul, Agenda 21, globalizarea, postmodernismul, reprezinta numele de cod pentru diverse tentative intelectuale mai mult sai mai putin ample de a promova colectivism social. E clar ca nu se va mai numi comunism si nici nu va putea pastra tonul sever, pentru ca libertatea in linii mari da bine. (In acest context e semnificativ si faptul ca liberalismul a ajuns sa insemne doar o alta varianta de socialism. Din acest motiv este vital pentru orice regim autoritar sa mentina cat mai vie senzatia ca aproape totul e permis.) Astazi, oamenilor li se pastreaza iluzia libertatii prin stimularea constanta a pasiunilor cu ajutorul media (o combinatie de Holywood si MTV), neglijand traditia clasica conform careia “un om are atatia stapani cate pasiuni are” . Libertatea de exprimare devine irelevanta prin zombificarea produsa de scoala publica si domnia televiziunilor reglementate, plus incercarile constante de a ingradi internetul (vezi SOPA, ACTA&restul cate vor mai fi). Iar dreptul de proprietate - cea mai redutabila fortareata impotriva statului si a companiilor privilegiate – a fost redus la o mica gluma privata sub torentul de impozite si legiferari. Liberi pe hartie, robi in fapt. Asa ca daca avem astazi un comunism cu o presa foarte proasta, acest lucru se datoreaza cu precadere comunistilor deghizati sub hainele noi ale progresului social, si mai putin unui dispret fata de societati gregare. Pentru ca in fond ceea ce ni se ofera spre alegere, chiar si in Romania, sunt doar variante de fascism. Si e cel putin ironic sa vezi cum un fost maoist este pus in fruntea Uniunii Europene, cum un fost utecist local si mereu sustinator al cresterii rolului statului se proclama campion al dreptei romanesti, sau cum patronul stangii contemporane isi intituleaza agentiile ideologice “fundatii pentru o societate deschisa”. Deci, nici nu e de mirare ca veritabilii comunistii, neatenti la schimbari, pierd lupta peste tot.

Comunismul in varianta lui hardcore (secera si ciocan, proprietate comuna, drepturi puse la pamant din capul locului, etc) nu prea mai e posibil, in special din motive explicate acum aproape 100 de ani de von Mises, intr-un articol ramas clasic. Dar mai exista si o explicatie suplimentara, pe langa cea economica. Intre timp, comunismul si-a pierdut mult din carisma sa ideologica, mortii lasati in urma nu au putut fi camuflati statistic, iar ambalajul cu poleiala rosie s-a uzat ireparabil. Exceptie facand cativa intelectuali francezi, mereu avizi de senzatii tari, mai nimeni nu ia in serios utopia marxista.
