Asadar, ce se poate desprinde, chiar si la cel mai superficial nivel, este predilectia pentru autori contemporani. Scriitorii secolului XX domina lejer topurile si doar ici colo mai rasare cate un nume din Belle Epoque. Romanele lui Murakami, Saramango, Fowles, Marquez, Sabato sau Vian obtin fara emotii adeziunea cititorilor de azi, iar monotonia listelor este sparta, cand si cand, de Tolstoi sau Dostoievski. Daca trecem la o analiza doar un pic mai profunda a listelor, observam ca diversitatea alegerilor lasa de dorit. Pe langa vecinatatea temporala amintita, cativa scriitori se incapataneaza sa apara in aproape toate listele si, ceea ce este mai relevant, nu provin din canonul educational. Cu alte cuvinte, mentionarea lor nu s-a facut in baza unei formatari scolare, ci pe baza preferintelor liber exprimate si nesilite de nimeni. Doar ca, oarecum straniu pentru timpuri atat de libere, foarte multa lume a fost influentata de Murakami sau Saramango. E imbucurator ca se citeste, dar e ingrijorator cand vezi ce se citeste. Sau, mai bine spus, ce nu se citeste. Daca astea sunt cartile care ne-au influentat si ne formeaza, si nu am niciun dubiu ca ele sunt, atunci cateva probleme relevante apar imediat. Prima dintre ele tine de o logica progresivista in care, pe spirala timpului, ce e mai inaintat temporal detine suprematia, inglobeaza trecutul si ii aduce, in cel mai bun caz, o valoare adaugata, atunci cand nu il arunca direct la cosul de gunoi. Astfel, criteriul relevant il reprezinta cronologia. Nimeni nu se mai omoara sa citeasca un autor vechi (adica dinainte de 1820) deoarece natura umana nu este fixa (o alta presupozite esentiala pentru modernitate) si, ca atare, problemele zilei de azi nu isi pot gasi solutia in scrieri mucegaite. Sunt depasite. Nu insist acum asupra faptului ca multi dintre scriitorii noi practica un relativism si evazionism debordant, ceea ce ofera un stimulent suplimentar pentru sensibilitatile moderne. „(...) succesul unor carti contemporane se datoreaza corespondentei care exista intre starea de nervi a autorului si starea de nervi a publicului. Deznadejea spirituala, care sub numele de acedia era unul din saptele pacate capitale pentru Evul Mediu, a devenit in ultima vreme una din principalele resurse ale literaturii.” (Irving Babbitt – „Literature and the American College”) In esenta, modernii vor paradisuri artificial-spirituale in care sa se piarda sau documente care sa le certifice inclinatiile (patimile). Evolutionismul acesta spiritual nu doar ca submineaza radical fundatiile intelectuale ale civilizatiei, dar reprezinta, la nivel stilistic, marca unui „provincialism temporal”. „La fel cum, un om de la tara priveste cu suspiciune tot ceea trece dincolo de orizontul regiunii sale, la fel modernismul este in esenta un provincialism, deoarece refuza sa se uite dincolo de orizontul momentului” (Richard Weaver – „Ideas Have Consequences”). In ordine practica, cititorul contemporan nu are absolut niciun fel de simt istoric, nici macar unul literar, daca ne luam dupa preferintele exprimate. Absenta istoriei din curriculum inseamna „tocirea constiintei” (Lord Acton) si imposibilitatea de a mai interpreta lumea si natura umana. Ori, unul dintre avantajele primordiale ale cartilor vechi este ca au fost deja omologate de o traditie, ne introduc intr-un dialog cultural si ne forteaza sa ne evaluam si asumam presupozitiile noastre cele mai ascunse. „Every age has its own outlook. It is specially good at seeing certain things and specially liable to make certain mistakes. We all, therefore, need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period. And that means the old books. All contemporary writers share to some extent the contemporary outlook – even those, like myself, who seem most opposed to it” (C.S. Lewis – „On the Reading of Old Books”). O problema secundara a cartilor noi este ca ele nu pot fi interpretate adecvat in absenta unui cadru narativ oferit de traditie. Pentru a relua o metafora a lui C.S. Lewis, este ca si cum ai incerca sa prinzi la ora 11 sensul unei conversatii incepute la ora opt. Din capul locului multe dintre sensurile importante se pierd inevitabil. Nu in ultimul rand, povestea listelor de carti trimite invariabil la disparitia completa a idealului clasic de educatie liberala. „Marea traditie”, pe baza careia s-a construit Estul si Vestul european, s-a evaporat, iar numele care altadata constituiau sarea si piperul oricarei antrenament intelectual astazi sunt doar referinte exotice. Nu este doar o chestiune de preferinte capricioase, de tipul unuia ii plac modernii, altuia clasicii, si nu exista vreun mijloc de a transa aceasta batalie a gusturilor. Diferenta fundamentala consta in aceea ca in educatia liberala scopul il reprezinta formarea unui om complet, in timp ce la moderni esentiala este utilitatea (Bacon) sau placerea (Rousseau).Dupa cum remarca Dorothy Sayers, capitalul cultural a fost epuizat, iar consecintele revolutiei educationale din ultimele secole se vad in prezent. “Has it ever struck you as odd, or unfortunate, that today, when the proportion of literacy is higher than it has ever been, people should have become susceptible to the influence of advertisement and mass propaganda to an extent hitherto unheard of and unimagined?” |




O campanie desfasurata pe facebook, in ultimele zile, ne-a oferit sansa de a observa preferintele culturale ale paturii mai educate. Provocarea, venita de niciunde, a constat in nominalizarea cartilor care au marcat traseul existential. Nu e neaparat cea mai stupida invitatie, dar macar are meritul ca ne ajuta sa intrezarim cum stam cultural. Nu e nici cel mai riguros sondaj, insa oamenii au facut listele cu entuziasm si chiar daca nu sunt sincere, cel putin exprima niste aspiratii. Deci, le putem folosi cu incredere ca material de studiu.
