De altfel, anticrestinismul pulseaza din fiecare rand al romanului amintit, iar Vidal foloseste toate prejudecatile curente pentru a arunca in ridicol religia lui Hristos, privilegiind, in schimb, un simulacru de filozofie sincretica in care se amesteca Helios, Mithra sau Plotin. Scriitorul mitraliaza fara intrerupere credinta, dogma si ritualurile crestine, responsabile, in viziunea sa, de decaderea lumii antice. Pamfletul, calomnia sau, pur si simplu, inventia istorica sunt folosite din plin pentru a da substanta unei uri viscerale. “Voi ati ales dezbinarea, neomenia, superstitia. Ei bine, am de gand sa extirp cancerul, sa intaresc statul”, ii spune imparatul unui crestin. Moartea lui Iulian Apostatul pica, cum altfel, in responsabilitatea crestinilor, insa la fel de relevante in aceasta directie sunt portretul caricatural facut lui Grigore de Nazianz sau descrierile vitriolante ale episcopilor. Iar replica imaginara data lui Ioan Hrisostom de Libanios: “Adevarul este ca mii de ani ne-am bizuit pe ceea ce era viu. Acum voi va bizuiti pe ceea ce e mort, voi va inchinati unui om mort si va spuneti unul altuia ca lumea aceasta nu este pentru noi si aceea viitoare este tot ceea ce conteaza. Numai ca nu exista nicio lume viitoare...”, pare venita mai degraba din gura unui new-yorkez progresivist (sau a lordului Keynes) decat din cea a unui sofist grec. O alta tema la zi din romanul lui Gore Vidal este cea a imperiului si visul unei lumi unite sub un singur drapel civilizator. Nu e greu de imaginat cine ar putea juca in prezent rolul Romei Antice...Este adevarat ca lipseste o argumentare amanuntita a motivelor de unificare politica, alta decat cea a vanitatii personale, dar printre randuri se pot intui mai multe: “Vreau India. Vreau China de partea cealalta.Vreau sa infig steagul cu dragonul pe tarmul acelei mari intunecate ca sangele din indepartatul Rasarit, si nu doar pentru glorie (...), ci ca sa aduc adevarul despre zei tuturor acelor tari, care se inchina Soarelui”... In fine, dincolo de aceste probleme fundamentale, “Iulian” reprezinta o lectura agreabila din care chiar si un cititor nu foarte atent poate sesiza, printre altele, viziunea homosexuala a lui Vidal. |




Desi trateaza un subiect istoric, romanul lui Gore Vidal, Iulian, are mai multa semnificatie pentru problemele actuale. Ce-i drept, decadenta romana se aseamana destul de bine cu lumea noastra postmoderna...
