Siguranta afisata si increderea nelimitata in dovezile teoriei nu rimeaza deloc cu sentimele incercate, de exemplu, de Charles Darwin, T.H. Huxley, August Weismann. Pentru toti evolutionistii relevanti, acceptarea teoriei rezida in ultima instanta, in lipsa unor dovezi cat de cat concludente, in credinta. Credinta in evolutionism, bineinteles, dar tot o credinta. Iata cum vedea, de pilda, Darwin lucrurile: “In fapt, credinta in Selectia Naturala trebuie sa se bazeze in prezent in intregime pe consideratii generale…Cand ne aplecam asupra detaliilor, putem demonstra ca nicio specie nu s-a schimbat; nu putem demonstra ca modificarile care au avut loc sunt benefice, ceea ce constituie baza teoriei. De asemenea, nu putem explica de ce la anumite specii au avut loc schimbari iar la altele nu”Cand un botanist i-a adus obiectia ca anumite forme biologice raman la fel pentru perioade de timp foarte lungi si pe spatii intinse, Darwin a recunoscut ca este o critica “formidabila in aparenta, si intr-o anumita masura in realitate”. Dar a oferit un contrargument ce tine tot de sfera credintei: “Nu rezida oare aceasta dificultate in asumptia noastra tacita ca stim mai mult decat stim de fapt? Nu am incercat ceva mai greu decat sa-mi amintesc mereu de ignoranta noastra….Suntem mult prea ignoranti, in aproape fiecare caz, pentru a putea sustine ca orice parte sau organ este atat de neimportant pentru bunastarea unei specii astfel incat modificarile din structura sa nu ar fi putut fi acumulate prin intermediul selectiei naturale. Dar putem crede cu siguranta”. “Buldogul lui Darwin”, T.H. Huxley, era mult mai rezervat in privat asupra teoriei decat in confruntarile publice. “Nu este sub nicio forma demonstrat ca un grup de animale, avand toate caracteristicile etalate de specii in natura, isi are originea in selectie, fie ea artificiala sau naturala”. Zoologistul si geneticianul german August Weismann impartasea o opinie similara: “Acceptam selectia naturala nu pentru ca putem sa demonstram procesul in detaliu, nu pentru ca putem mai greu sau mai usor sa ni-l imaginam, ci pur si simplu pentru ca trebuie, pentru ca este singura explicatie posibila la care ne putem gandi. Trebuie sa o imbratisam (teoria selectiei sexuale – n.r) deoarece in caz contrar caracterele sexuale secundare raman inexplicabile” Potrivit unei intuitii comune, toate aceste temri par justificate pentru niste oameni preocupati de un domeniu stiintific incipient. Mai mult, marsul triumfal al evolutionismului si succesul sau academic trimit, in aparenta, catre o sumedenie de probe, menite sa confirme teoria. Insa scandalul Piltdown Man de la mijlocul secolului trecut arata doar ca dovezile decisive intarziau si continua sa intarzie sa apara. Gertrude Himmelfarb comenteaza evenimentul in excelenta carte “Darwin and the Darwinian Revolution”, din care am extras si citatele de mai sus: “Zelul cu care a fost aparat de oamenii de stiinta eminenti, usurinta cu care cei care nu l-au privit cu incredere au reusit sa-l adapteze, si felul in care cele mai respectate metode stiintifice au fost aplicate la rece si cu migala, cu efectul de a confirma atat originea fosilelor cat si adevarul teoriei, sunt cel putin suspecte.” Controversa s-a incheiat doar dupa 40 de ani, in anul 1953, cand a fost dovedit indubital ca Piltdown Man reprezinta o frauda colosala. In fine, problema iscata de aceasta controversa este exemplara, deoarece trimite catre o obiectie foarte veche dar mereu prezenta adresata evolutionistilor: lipsa dovezilor. “Ceea ce se afla sub semnul intrebarii sunt operatiile selectiei naturale in evolutia unei specii majore intr-o alta specie, si, in ultima instanta, operatiile selectiei naturale in evolutia tuturor speciilor dintr-o forma primordiala unica, asa cum sustine Darwin” (Himmelfarb) |




De regula, in orice discutie despre religie cu o persoana agnostica survine un moment in care ti se reaminteste de evolutionism: “Dar totul a fost demonstrat. Exista dovezi stiintifice care indica limpede originea animala a omului”.
