Dincolo de fragilitatea distinctiei stanga/dreapta, nu poate fi totusi contestata o reducere a intensitatii miscarilor si actiunilor teroriste de stanga. Organizatii ca Brigazile Rosii, Factiunea Armatei Rosii sau Celulele Combatantilor Comunisti si-au redus activitatea sau au disparut cu totul. Probabil ca un motiv este acela ca sfarsitul Razboiului Rece i-a lasat pe teroristii de stanga si fara farul doctrinar central (URSS), dar si fara sursele de finantare nelimitate de care dispuneau din partea Imperiului Rosu. Insa exista si un alt motiv pentru care secolul XIX si prima jumatate a secolului XX au fost marcate de terorismul de stanga, in timp ce finalul secolului XX si inceputul secolului XXI nu. Si acesta consta in orientarea ideologica a establishmentului. Establishment-ul secolului XIX era unul conservator, contra-revolutionar, cel putin in prima parte a sa. In a doua jumatate a secolului XIX si in prima parte a secolului XX, pana la revolutia impusa de administratia Roosevelt in SUA (e drept incepuse mai devreme in timpul primului razboi mondial prin instituirea impozitului pe venit si crearea Fed), establishment-ul, cel putin in statele anglo-saxone si nordice, a fost unul liberal. Nu exista terorism de dreapta pentru ca nu exista guvernare de stanga. De altfel, singura exceptie notabila a fost reprezentata de primul gest de rezistenta impotriva dictaturii lui Napoleon in 1800, prin atentatul cu “masina infernala” (o caruta incarcata cu praf de pusca) detonata de regalisti pe rue Nicaise in Paris, insa si aceasta reprezenta doar o copie a unei masini creata anterior de iacobini. In oglinda, se poate spune ca terorismul de stanga a disparut in ultima parte a secolului trecut si in prima parte a acestuia pentru ca establishmentul a devenit din ce in ce mai apropiat de ideile de stanga. Egalitarismul, discriminarea pozitiva, furnizarea serviciilor fiecaruia dupa nevoi “din leagan pana-n mormant” de catre stat – toate aceste idei, odata revolutionare au devenit realizari ale modernitatii. Pana si ecoterorismul ramane fara obiect de activitate in fata ofensivei ecologiei de stat. Si chiar daca mai exista teroristi ecologici lor li se iarta multe pentru ca, potrivit establishmentului: “Among those places where leftist impulses may find violent expression is , which seems to refer to "ecoterrorism" more often than it refers to other issue-based prompts to violence. While there is no question that groups like the Animal Liberation Front do harm, it is questionable whether the damage they inflict—primarily to property—should be considered terrorism.” Precum se vede, nu numai ca terorismul de stanga a disparut ca urmare a faptului ca stanga democrata se afla la putere (o victorie peste timp a mensevicilor impotriva bolsevicilor), ci si ca urmare a faptului ca establishmentul tolereaza actele de terorism ale acestuia, preferand sa le redefineasca, prin contorsionari de limbaj. Insa istoria terorismului nu este legata in primul rand de distinctia doctrinara stanga/dreapta (desi istoric este indiscutabil ca este mai apropiat de stanga), ci de o advarata dialectica a violentei, ce poate fi rezumata intr-un singur cuvant: revolutie. Terorismul este legat ideologic de revolutie, si in special de revolutia franceza. Totul porneste de la celebra “Liberte, egalite, fraternite”. Primul dintre cuvinte a avut o soarta revolutionara scurta. Influentati de succesul Razboiului de independenta al SUA, dar si de literatura anglo-saxona, pentru o scurta vreme, care s-a inchieat prin 1825, o parte din revolutionarii de pe Vechiul Continent erau liberali si doreau instituirea unor monarhii constitutionale. Cu timpul, miscarea liberala a fost inghitita de establishment si au ramas oligopoliste pe spectrul revolutionar ideile reprezentate de celelalte doua cuvinte: egalite si fraternite. Iar aici a intervenit o falie pe care o gasim in toate miscarile revolutionare ulterioare: intre egalitarismul social internationalist si fraternitatea politica nationalista, intre extremismul/terorismul de stanga si cel de dreapta. Desi de cele mai multe ori sunt prezentate drept doctrine opuse, ele au acealeasi origini revolutionare. De altfel, cu mult inainte de izbucnirea Revolutiei Franceze, Louis Sebastien Mercier a introdus celebra fraza les extrèmes se touchent, ca titlu al unui capitol al volumului Tableaux de Paris. Acesta anticipa afinitatea si importurile constiente sau inconstiente dintre cele doua extreme, stanga si dreapta. Cele doua miscari revolutionare, international socialista si national socialista, au au alt element comun pe care il mostenesc de la stramosii lor revolutionari de secol XVIII: diluarea importantei scopurilor in favoarea mijloacelor. Cu putine exceptii, niciunul dintre revolutionarii importanti (activi) nu avea habar cum va arata societatea pe care vroia s-o construiasca: de acea se ascundeau in spatele unor sloganuri goale de continut, insa pline de sentimentalism romantic precum “liberte, egalite, fraternite”. Iar in 1814, un tanar revolutionar german, Karl Follen trece la un alt nivel infintand o Liga a tinerilor. Follen devine obsedat de problema actiunii, care apare si la un celebru personaj demonic dostoievskian: cum sa treci de la discutii inutile fara sfarsit la actiune concreta. “Viata fara cunoastere este mai buna decat cunoasterea fara viata”, sustinea acesta. Follen infiinteaza o banda de activisti revolutionari, “neconditionatii”, care se alimenta din ideea asasinatelor politice selective (pana atunci asasinatele politice erau exclusiv apanajul unor familii nobiliare concurente). Ei sustineau ca sperjurul si crima comisa impotriva “marilor borfasi si ucigasi ai libertatii populare” este o datorie. Un student al sau a pus in aplicatie ideile lui Follen, ucigand pe 23 martie 1819 un proeminent dramaturg al vremii, banuit a fi colaborator la politiei Sfintei Aliante. Follen a emigrat in SUA, unde a fost rasplatit, pentru ideile sale, cu prima catedra de literatura germana infiintata la Universitatea Harvard.
