“Gusturile nu se discuta”. Este o expresie comuna, care tinteste a exprima toleranta, in special in chestiunile estetice, iar cei care vor sa-i intareasca sensul o folosesc de regula in versiunea latina. Cu alte cuvinte, ii adauga un prestigiu clasic. Pentru antici insa Frumosul reprezenta o categorie obiectiva esentiala, alaturi de Bine si Adevar, capabila de a fi inteleasa rational de catre aproape oricine. Trecand pentru moment dincolo de chestiunea istorica, este de remarcat ca astazi expresia tine loc de justificare pentru foarte multe aberatii estetice, pentru lene sau pentru imposibilitatea de a argumenta o preferinta. Mai mult, in aceasta versiune relativista se presupune implicit ca gusturile au o origine irationala. De pilda, daca unuia ii place Haydn si altuia Lady Gaga problema nu poate fi transata rational pentru ca avem de-a face cu un dat subiectiv. Asadar, suntem lasati de izbeliste intr-un haos valoric, din care nu se vede nicio iesire. Frumosul si uratul nu mai exista ca niste categorii obiective, totul devenind o afacere privata – “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. “Nimeni nu este perfect”. Reprezinta echivalentul etic al relativismului estetic descris mai sus, inclusiv in aparenta de toleranta. Departe de a exprima vreun gand de smerenie, expresia amintita are drept consecinta imediata suspendarea oricarei judecati morale. Din moment ce nimeni nu este perfect, inseamna ca nimeni nu are dreptul de a formula acuze la adresa comportamentului altcuiva. Presupozitia evidenta este ca doar cei fara greseala se pot erija in judecatori. In consecinta, singura salvare ar veni daca privim vorba amintita drept un poncif inocent. Totusi, oamenii nu o folosesc in principal doar ca sa-si bata gura si sa umple cu banalitati spatiile dintr-o convorbire. Desi fac si asta. De cele mai multe ori insa, cred ca expresia indeamna indirect la comportamente imorale, din moment ce “toti suntem o apa si un pamant”. “Adevarul este la mijloc”. Este o modalitate comoda de a spune ca practic adevarul a devenit irelevant, cat timp pentru a-l gasi sau a-l afla tot ce trebuie sa faci este sa te situezi intre doua extreme. Iar extremele pot sa fluctueze foarte mult. Si la fel ca in cazurile precedente, spoiala de moderatie si bun simt a expresiei incearca sa mascheze consecintele dezastruoase. Pentru ca adevarul a fost vazut pana mai ieri drept ceva obiectiv, identificabil rational, direct, si nu prin relatii pseudomatematice intre variabile confuze. Investigatia, mai ales in problemele morale, devine lipsita de sens, deoarece oamenii “respectabili” nu vor face altceva decat sa se situeze la mijloc intre coordonate arbitrare. In felul acesta apar oamenii caldicei, in stare sa justifice o multime de prostii, pentru ca “asa sunt vremurile”. Cele trei ipostaze lingvistice amintite mai sus cunosc numeroare sinonime, iar lista lor este mult mai lunga. Ba mai mult, se imbogateste pe zi ce trece, caci functioneaza de minune pentru a inlocui gandirea rationala si responsabilitatea personala. Dar ar fi gresit sa cautam vinovatii principali printre colportorii de relativism cotidian. Adevaratii ideologi sunt in universitati si intoxica mintile tinerilor cu teoria progresului, a lui “anything goes”, a multiculturalismului, a evolutiei, a dialecticii, samd, intr-un proces de reeducare global.
