Productia, realizata in anii de aur ai Holywood-ului, reflecta copilaria viitorului inventator, marcata de neintelegerea celor din jur si de exmatricularea din scoala. Edison era considerat un elev “sarac cu duhul” nu doar de catre invatatoarea sa, ci si de comunitatea locala. Si asta in conditiile in care manifesta deja o curiozitate exceptionala si incepuse sa puna in aplicare multe dintre ideile sale inovatoare, chiar daca putin apreciate la vremea respectiva. Povestea contine in ea esenta americanismului de secol XIX, in care oportunitatile erau nenumarate, reglementarile nule, iar educatia optionala. Succesul devenea astfel obligatoriu pentru orice individ suficient de ambitios si intreprinzator. Respins de comunitate, Edison devine, la mai putin de 12 ani, propriul sau angajat, cu acordul mamei sale, si incepe sa vanda diverse lucruri in tren. Cu un fler pentru afaceri iesit din comun (doar a infiintat General Electric, o companie activa si astazi ), isi diversifica oferta de produse si lanseaza propriul ziar, care continea stiri despre Razboiul de Secesiune, tiparit chiar in tren. Profiturile devin consistente, ceea ce ii permite micului Edison sa isi cumpere diverese tratate stiintifice, Faraday, Maxwell, pentru a gasi raspunsuri la intrebari pe care scoala le ignora. Pentru a putea surprinde colapsul educational pe care il traim in prezent, vizionarea Tanarului Tom Edison ar trebui sa aiba atasata in permanenta imaginea curenta a scolii publice. Edison ar fi trimis astazi direct la psiholog care ar incerca sa vada in ce fel parintii sunt responsabili de “dificultatile sale”. Apoi, pentru remedierea situatiei, ar fi drogat cu Prozac si alte medicamente pentru a-i domoli entuziasmul adolescentin. Profesorii l-ar imbuiba cu informatii nefolositoare, predate intr-o ordine ilogica, astfel incat curiozitatea sa nativa sa se atrofieze cat mai repede. Nu ar fi exmatriculat, deoarece niciun copil nu are voie sa scape de cei opt-noua ani de ocna obligatorie (“no child left behind”). Insa parintii sai ar avea probleme serioase daca ar incerca sa-l lase sa se descurce singur si, cel mai probabil, ar pierde custodia copilului. Un antreprenor de 12 ani care vinde maruntisuri prin tren nu inseamna pentru noi altceva decat exploatare de catre parinti, iresponsabilitate, evaziune fiscala, nerespectarea reglementarilor in vigoare privind transportul calatorilor, samd. Decadenta educationala si morala ar trebui sa fie izbitoare.

Un film teribil de simpatic chiar si pentru copii, “Tanarul Tom Edison”, cu Mickey Rooney savuros in rolul principal, are un interes special pentru cei preocupati de subiectul educatiei publice.
